The Teton County Sheriff’s Office is hiring for the position of Detention Sergeant.  As a Detention Sergeant, you will be responsible for the oversight of the detention center operations.  You will supervise, assign and review staff responsible for the security of the detention facility and the treatment and care of inmates housed therein.  You will perform administrative duties and help plan and manage the budget.  The detention center houses our own detainees and inmates from Jackson Police Department, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming Highway Patrol and other state, and federal agencies.

The detention center has seven blocks with 45 beds and has eighteen budgeted positions to include Sergeants and Master Officers.  You will work with and maintain systems to include Zuercher Jail, Live Scan, Securus, Xprotect, Prima View, Swanson and Cobra. You will be responsible to aid in the hiring and ongoing development of staff.   You will supervise and assume all duties of a detention officer/deputy.

The starting salary range for the Detention Sergeant position is $64,234.   Salary for lateral (experienced) applicants will be determined after experience and qualifications are examined and verified.  Benefits include health and dental insurance, Wyoming law enforcement retirement and life insurance as well as vacation, holiday, sick and comp time.  Employees get use of the recreation center and the town/county exercise facility and access to bus and ski pass reductions.  The position is 24/7 and requires shift work (nights, holidays and weekends).  Successful applicants are employed on a probationary status for a period of one (1) year and are asked to sign a two year commitment.

TCSO Application

The hiring process will occur on Tuesday, October 24.  The day will begin with a physical fitness assessment followed by a three exercise assessment center to measure the applicant’s leadership and mentoring abilities, judgment and decision making skills as well as gauge your interpersonal and communication style.  This will be followed by an oral board interview on Wednesday, October 25.  Top applicants will receive additional information about the testing and interview process once qualifications are verified.

Requirements (see job description for additional qualifications)

  • High school diploma or GED and four years of detention experience, including two years supervisory duties; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Detention Officer Basic or equivalent with the ability to transfer to Wyoming POST
  • Mid-level or upper level management training preferred
  • A thorough background investigation will be completed on applicant.
  • Submit to a polygraph, psychological evaluation and a medical examination
