Sheriff Whalen withdraws from COPS Hiring Recovery Program

9/23/2011 9:04:18 AM

Sheriff Jim Whalen made the decision recently to withdraw from the U.S. Department of Justice grant program.  The awarded grant, which is called the COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP) was going to fund one additional deputy sheriff assigned to patrol.   Sheriff Whalen made the decision not to draw down on the funds because the department has been able to adequately provide services to the community with less patrol staff.   Additionally, there were other costs associated with hiring another deputy that would have become the responsibility of the taxpayers above and beyond the grant allocation. E.g. uniforms, equipment, vehicle etc.
