The Bike Rodeo is a yearly event usually scheduled for a Saturday in the latter part of May. The Bike Rodeo is a safety refresher course for those “experienced” young people who have been riding bikes for awhile, and a learning course for the beginners.
As you arrive at the Bike Rodeo with your bike, stop at the following stations:
Station One: Registration table
Register your bike (in case it is lost or stolen)
Get a Bike Rodeo Entry Form (completion of this form is each child’s entry ticket for the drawing of a new bicycle)
Station Two: Bike mechanic
Bikes are checked for operating safety by a qualified bike mechanic from one of the local bike shops.
Station Three: Helmet check
Each child’s helmet is inspected by Jackson Hole Fire EMS personnel to make sure the helmet is the right size and adjusted correctly. Jackson Hole Fire EMS personnel also have helmets available to those who need one.
Station Four: Skills course
Each child must ride his/her bike through a skills course which is drawn out on the parking lot pavement using chalk and driving cones.
The Skills course consists of testing/teaching each child’s ability to:
Turn corners
Ride in a circle
Stop quickly
Obey stop sign
Obey yield sign
Use hand signals
Be respectful of other bikers
Listen to safety pointers from spotters around the skills course
Staion Five: Group Ride
This ride is with uniformed bike patrol officers from the Teton County Sheriff’s Office and/or Jackson Police Department. The children ride with the officers to review what they have learned on the skills course.
At the end of the group ride, each child returns to the registration table.
Each child then turns in his/her entry form which is put in a box for the bike drawing.
At the completiong of the bicycle course, each child is given a “Bicycle Course Completion Card.”
After the completion of the bike rodeo, pizza is served while the participants wait for the winner of the bike drawing to be announced. This year’s Bike Rodeo was held the 23rd of May, 2009. Forty nine children entered for a chance to win the bike and the lucky winner was a 4 year old local girl.
