VIN Inspections
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspections are required when you register a used vehicle or trailer in Wyoming that was purchased outside of the state of Wyoming. When a new vehicle is purchased from another state you may be required to obtain a VIN inspection if the dealer did not complete the inspection prior to sale. Vehicles that can be driven and meet legal requirements can be inspected Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm at the Sheriff's Office Administration Building, 180 S King Street in Jackson.
The inspector will need the following:
- Ability to see the odometer on motorized vehicles
- Documentation that includes the VIN, such as a title or bill of sale
Once the VIN inspection is complete you will be provided a document stating the VIN is clear. You will need to take this document to the Teton County Clerk's Office for registration of the vehicle.
There is a $10 fee for the VIN inspection and may either be collected by the Sheriff's Office or Teton County Treasurer's Office in pursuant to WS 18-3-402. The Sheriff's Office can only accept cash for payment.
If you are unable to drive the vehicle you can schedule a VIN check at the vehicles location, provided it is in Teton County, by calling the Communications Center at 307-733-2331.
Stop by the administration desk for an application for a state-assigned VIN if you have a homemade trailer or vehicle that you need to assign a VIN.
